PIECES is a series of artworks that has come together during lockdown Covid19. This series of works allowed me to recollect my thoughts, finds a place of peace and start re-igniting a variety of ideas I have been thinking of and working on for years.
PIECES is not one concept but the development of 'pieces' of concepts which have been created each using one 'piece' of paper.
The first set of ideas are a range of portraits that were taken at The Creative co-LAB to become a large portrait mural. They have stimulated a new series I am currently working on titles The Covid Sessions. This series is also portraits taken from my 'friends' on Facebook's profile pictures. The social media space has become the connection with people and their portraits often are the first connection on how they see themselves and what they want the world to see.
The second set of ideas has been a work in progress since my twenties - going back through my visual diaries and creating artworks from all those designs and sketches. For years I tried to turn my style of sketches into paintings but it never worked how I wanted it to. Now, working in this new medium of paper cutting; I found the method that really captures the simplicity I am after in my sketches. Re-looking at older sketches of mine and creating artworks within the PIECES series has led to the start of a series of works titles Pieces of Me.
I love working large but limitation of space and my on-going struggle with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has led to the current works all being small at 210mm x 297mm. All the works are done by hand taking hours to produce, there are no two the same. The series below is completed as it has developed further ideas and series which I will post soon.
